Automotive Calibration
In the 21st century, your car is keeping you safer. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) provide a host of features and are required for the NHTSA’s five-star rating. But these systems require precise installation and calibration. Repairs to suspension, realignment, or windshield replacement require this calibration, but not a dealership to perform it. Twin Bay Glass can help.
NHTSA Five-Star
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)’s five-star rating requires forward collision alert and automatic emergency braking.
This is done with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems,) relying on cameras, lasers, lidar, and radar – often mounted to the windshield. When a new windshield is installed, a recalibration must be performed to ensure proper functionality.
By 2025 49% of all cars will require calibration to ensure these critical safety measures succeed.
Auto Glass Replacement
Since these ADAS systems require sensors and cameras mounted to the glass or rearview mirror it makes sense that they need to be calibrated when your auto glass gets replaced. These cameras don’t know where they are in relation to the glass.
But other repairs can require a calibration. If you’ve had repairs on the suspension of the vehicle, or a vehicle alignment, these things directly affect the angle of the camera.
What most people don’t realize is you don’t have to take your vehicle to the dealership for this calibration. Twin Bay Glass has the technology and certifications to perform it here.
Why is this important?
A change in camera angle of just 1° can have a huge impact on the camera’s viewing area & on how well ADAS features will work.
Take a look at the picture at the top and you can easily see how just a small shift at the camera can have large scale effect on what the system is able to detect. The red area shows what the camera is originally programmed to view (and where the vehicle’s ADAS features will always assume it is viewing) while the tan area & overlap is where the camera is actually looking after replacement, but before calibration.
You’ll notice that what seems like a minimal difference at the windshield, translates to a large difference down the road. (Possibly an error of several hundred feet at highways speeds)

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE TO SAY:
“I was very impressed with the customer service at Twin Bay Glass. They cut a custom mirror to fit an old frame. After installing it myself, a crack developed several days later. I brought it back in today to have the mirror replaced. They did so on the spot in just a few minutes. When I went to pay, they refused payment and asked that I would consider them in the future. I will definitely be back and would highly recommend them!”
